Creating Virtual Desktop
Virtual Desktops are those that help to hold the view over many programs even on one monitor. Since, many jobs have to be done at the same time, it is better to manage one desktop to a virtual desktop. And there is option to do that. We can then do group communication and internet programs. For example, we surf internet in one desktop and do office application on the other. The extra advantage is that we need not search for the window of the mail program, for example, amongst many work-related windows.
It is a simple and free tool for enabling virtual desktops from the XP PowerToys. The tool collection is available at the website www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx”. This tool is ready for using immediately after installation, even if we do not notice any changes. We need to right click anywhere in the task bar and select “toolbars/desktop Manager”; then we will see the “MSVDM” tool bar for quick screen changes in the task bar.
Anyway, the displayed text does not have any function. It only wastes space. Then we have to remove the task bar lock first by right clicking on it and selecting the “Lock the task bar” context command. Then we need to right click on the start bar of the tool bar and select the “Show Title” option. Clicking once on the “Preview” symbol, we can see on over view of the entire four virtual desktops.
We can get different background wallpaper as well as custom key combinations for quick switching between the individual screens through the context menu of the tool bar. We can determine through the “Shared Desktops” option in the context menu whether the task bar displays the current screen window or all windows together. When the settings are activated, we can fetch windows by clicking on the desk top that is active at that moment. When every thing is arranged, we can deactivate the option so that we can view only the current desktop.
Another free utility with a larger functional scope is “Dexpot”. It can be managed under all versions of windows. We can find it on the web site http://dexpot.de/index.php .
