There are opportunities for the adventurous in all aspects of bulk email marketing. It must be accepted that following the crowd, if the crowd is successful, is not a bad idea on its own. After all if they are making money then by copying their methods you are likely to end up with a certain share.
Most parents will know that if they are told by a teacher that their child ‘could do better’, the probability is that they could find nothing to either criticise or praise in the student. And that is as much a criticism in email marketing. You can, should, and probably must, do better.

They would have spent some time on designing them, using their experience to come up with a format that will not only be effective but quick to populate as well. The probability is that you will have studied the marketing emails you have received, worked out which ones attracted you and followed the general style and layout for your own. This is not to criticise the method. We have all done that. However, you can do a bit more.
There will be a whole range of templates to choose from. Making the choice is not as simple as just picking one at random and running with it. The design has a number of functions.

They might well have queued at one of your counters, hence the attraction of email marketing. If so they will have seen your logo, receipts, invoices and letter headings.
Email marketing does not exist on its own. It can be very useful to have a style of the house, something that is uniquely yours. Once people see the design they are aware of its origin. They feel reassured. A degree of commonality can be effective.
They might well be in receipt of your email newsletter so you have the added requirement that the two forms of communication must be different enough so that the reader knows which is which, but similar enough to make it obvious they come from the same source.
